 Storytime with Jesus is a social opportunity at Zion for families with young children. This is for all caregivers and children at Zion and in the wider community. In other words: you do not need to be a member to attend---all are welcome!
The focus is on children learning through stories, songs, and play that Jesus loves them.
When? First & third Tuesday of each month at 9:15 am to 10:30 am, in Trinity Hall. If you can’t be here by 9:15, come anyway!
9:15-9:30 Arrival. Kids play and socialize. 9:30-9:45 Learn through song and movement. 9:45-10:00 Storytime. 10:00-10:20 Fun activity, snack, socialize. 10:20-10:30 Clean up
Families are welcome to join this new opportunity for a themed story time each month. Caregivers are encouraged to socialize while the children learn and play together. No registration required, just come and enjoy!

Dorothy Ann Berkenes (Olson) of Buffalo, MN June 3, 1936 – August 18, 2026
Dorothy Ann Berkenes (Olson), age 90, of Buffalo, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. She was born in Britton, SD, on June 3, 1936. She was the youngest of four children born to Ole and Dora (Luff) Olson. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Langford, SD. In 1954, she graduated from Pierpont High in Pierpont, SD. After receiving her education, she worked for one year in Aberdeen, SD, and then attended Black Hills State college in Spearfish, SD. She taught at a rural school near Langford, SD, before beginning a career in administrative work locally. On June 16, 1957, Dorothy Olson married James E. Berkenes in Long Beach, CA. For Dorothy, establishing and growing a family farm in Buffalo was a passion and joy she shared with Jim. She was always proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed making many Norwegian dishes. She also enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends and spending time with her beloved family. With her caring nature, she was a loving “grandmother” figure to many. At the age of 90, she was able to see four generations of her family and watch her own family of four grow to a group of twenty immediate family members! She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Berkenes; her parents, Ole and Dora Olson; and her siblings, Evelyn Olson, Gordon Olson, Clarion Olson.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Robert (Diane) Berkenes and Douglas (Brenda) Berkenes; grandchildren, Chad (Melissa), Heather, Amanda and Alicia; great-grandchildren, Conner, Aurora, Nolan, Caleb, and Luther; sister-in-law, Audrey Jarrott; and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Zion Lutheran Church, Lunch will follow the service at the church, 1200 Hwy 25 S, Buffalo, MN. Burial will be at Zion Cemetery in Buffalo, MN after lunch. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Peterson Chapel of Buffalo, MN. 763-682-1363. www.thepetersonchapel.com.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The prayer shawl ministry (knitters and crocheters) meets in the prayer room on the first and third Thursdays of each month, from 1:00-3:00pm. If you are unable to attend the meeting but still want to participate, contact the office to be included on email communications.
Prayer shawls are made full of prayers for the recipients. Our hope is that when the shawl is worn, they can feel the warmth of Jesus’ support, guidance and love. If you know of someone who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl, please contact the Zion office.

John Oswald Brager of Buffalo, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born on June 6, 1945, to Ralph and Eleanor (Johnson) Brager in Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from North High School, he joined the Army National Guard. He then co-owned a business with his brother doing cabinetry and production painting. He married Jean (Van Nurden) Brager on November 6, 1976, and together they shared fifty-one wonderful years. John was known as a quiet listener, being an easy-going guy, and for his steadfast dedication to his family. He enjoyed many hobbies including walking hundreds of miles with his beloved dog Jox, building computers, volunteering for several groups, and working on word search books. He enjoyed gathering with his Monday night burger crew and always had an appetite for ice cream. He was known for being into electronics and computers and people mentioned he missed his calling as he used those skills to help others and to keep in touch with his family as they moved further away. He was an active member at Zion Lutheran church in Buffalo. In his retirement, he was adventurous, went on road trips, spent his winters in San Diego, and always found fun events to attend. John was also an avid supporter of all his children and grandchildren’s sports activities with many hours spent in bleachers and standing in fields. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his five children Stephen (Melissa), Jacqueline (Armando), Jason (Kim), Jolene, and Jill (Anthony); his seven grandchildren Lena, Elissa, Skylar, Tessie, Karter, Brynn, and Thaddeus; his three siblings Calvin (Annie), Carol, Mary (Mike); and an abundance of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Sunday School Sunday School is held during the 8:30am and 10:30am services for children grades Pre-K (3yrs old) - 5th grade. Classes are held September - May.
Confirmation Confirmation for students in 6th - 8th grade will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:45pm beginning October 7
-All incoming 6th graders and new to confirmation students are being asked to register.- -Those previously enrolled need not register again.-
Youth Bells Ring Forth/Class Ring rehearses on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-4:45 PM during the school year. This handbell group is open to students in grades 3-8. Rehearsals start on Wednesday, September 16.

John Sverre Halvorson, known affectionately as Grandpa John, passed away September 8, 2026, after a long and full life rooted in faith, community, and deep devotion to those he loved. Born January 19, 1939, on a farm in Big Bend Township, Chippewa County, John was the first child and only son of Palmer and Lavina (Eide) Halvorson. John grew up on the family farm north of Montevideo, where he developed a lifelong love of animals and agriculture. He was active in 4H, showing livestock at county and state fairs and forming early leadership skills that would shape his future career. He attended country school before graduating from Milan High School in 1956, where he participated in football, basketball, band, choir, the school newspaper, and Future Farmers of America, earning the State FFA Degree—the first student from Milan to do so. John continued his education at the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry and a Master of Arts in Public Administration. He was a lifelong Minnesota Gopher and Big Ten fan. In 1959, at a student mixer, John met Janet Stark, the woman who would become the love of his life. They married on June 6, 1964, beginning a partnership marked by devotion, shared purpose, and a deep commitment to family and community. John dedicated his career to agricultural education and service. He worked as a County Extension Agent in several Minnesota counties, supporting youth through 4H and strengthening rural communities. He later served as Director of Agronomy Services for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and became the first General Manager of the Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA). A lifelong Rotarian, John served as District Governor for Rotary District 5950 in 1998–99, traveling widely and building relationships across the country and world. His service earned numerous honors, including the National DHIA Martin A. Wilson Memorial Award (1996), the Minnesota DHIA Distinguished Service Award (1998), the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce Honored Citizen (2001), and the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service (2002). John was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. John and Jan raised three children—Jason, Juhl, and Jolyn—instilling in them the same values of integrity, curiosity, and compassion that guided his own life. He was immensely proud of their accomplishments and the families they built. Nothing brought John more joy than his grandchildren: Kaitlyn, John, Samuel, Mya, and Leah. He spoke often about them, celebrating their personalities, talents, and the happiness they brought into his life. John’s life was defined by service, humility, humor, and gratitude. He cherished his roots, his community, and the generations that followed him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, leadership, and love that will continue to guide all who knew him. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff from the neuro intensive care unit at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, St. Croix Hospice and Parkview Care Center. John was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Lavina, wife Jan, sisters-in-law Phyllis Ede and Charleen Stark; brothers-in-law LeRoy Stark and Ron Ochsendorf. He leaves behind his children, Jason (Ellen), Juhl (Marla), and Jolyn; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, John, Sam, Mya and Leah; sister Mary Ochsendorf; brother-in-law Robert Ede; many nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held September 12, 2026, with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., funeral service to follow at 10 a.m., Zion Lutheran Church, 1200 Hwy 25, Buffalo, MN. Memorials preferred to the Zion Cemetery Fund or the Rotary International Foundation.

 You are invited to attend New Member Connect. This is for both those who are brand new to Zion and those who have been around for many years and just not gotten around to becoming an official member.
Membership is one way of connecting to this faith community. Membership affirms that we are connected together for the mission of this congregation and for the mutual development of our faith in Christ Jesus. “New Member Connect” is an opportunity to spend time in conversation with Zion pastors, staff, and others and to find out more about our mission and vision before committing to membership.
Gather in the Sacred Grounds youth room, where we will have a comfortable spot waiting for you! Children are welcome and the nursery is open and staffed during this time as well. Coffee, juice, and light breakfast choices will be provided.

Sunday School is offered for age 3 to grade 5 during the 8:30 and 10:30 worship services.
Zion's Sunday School program follows a large group/small group model. Children will begin in worship with their families and then attend Sunday School after the Children's Message. When the children’s message is over, kids will gather for large group time to join in fun music, videos, activities, and skits to learn about the bible stories. After large group, kids will then follow their teachers to a classroom for small group time. Small group time is a time to dig deeper, ask questions, make crafts, do experiments, build friendships, and strengthen our relationship with God.

If you're looking for a women's Bible study for the new year, Zion offers two monthly options. The Naomi Circle meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:30am and the Rebecca Circle meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10am. Meetings are at Zion each month and no sign up is needed.
Both groups will use the Bible study from the ELCA women's ministry Gather magazine.

Michael Frederick Kassulke, born November 4, 1949, in Fairmont, MN, was a beloved son to Irvin and Elois, husband to Julie Ann Kassulke (Hagen) for 55 years, father to Justin and Jed, father-in-law to Deanne and Christin, grandfather to Landon, Avery, Payton, Tate, and Macy, brother to Deb, Kent, and Jon, and a cherished friend to many. His greatest joys in life were his family, his friends, and the relationships he built along the way. Mike took tremendous pride in the people he loved and, above all, adored his grandchildren. He loved watching them participate in sports, celebrating their accomplishments, sharing laughs, and simply being part of their lives. His love, encouragement, and pride in them will remain with them forever. Mike made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. To him, friends were family. He enjoyed good conversation, laughter, friendly competition, and simply spending time with the people he cared about. His love of golf, volleyball, and basketball brought many friendships and countless memories, but for Mike, the people were always more important than the game. One of the greatest joys of Mike's life was living on the lake. His home became a gathering place filled with family, friends, boats, sunshine, watersports, food, laughter, and countless memories. Some of the best days were simply lake days surrounded by the people he loved. Mike and Julie also shared a love of travel and adventure. Over the years, they enjoyed epic vacations and experiences around the world, creating memories that took them far beyond home. Their winters spent in Arizona became another special part of their lives, filled with sunshine, golf, friends, and time enjoying a different pace of life. Mike had a genuine ability to make people feel welcome and connected. Whether someone was a lifelong friend or someone he had just met, he took an interest in their life and made them feel like they belonged. Perhaps his greatest gift was simply being there. Mike leaves behind a family and circle of friends who loved him deeply and will miss him immensely. His greatest legacy is the love he gave, the friendships he treasured, and the countless memories he created, especially those shared with family and friends at the lake, on the golf course, and around the people he loved. May he rest peacefully, knowing that he was loved, appreciated, and will never be forgotten.

Sunday School is offered for age 3 to grade 5 during the 8:30 and 10:30 worship services.
Zion's Sunday School program follows a large group/small group model. Children will begin in worship with their families and then attend Sunday School after the Children's Message. When the children’s message is over, kids will gather for large group time to join in fun music, videos, activities, and skits to learn about the bible stories. After large group, kids will then follow their teachers to a classroom for small group time. Small group time is a time to dig deeper, ask questions, make crafts, do experiments, build friendships, and strengthen our relationship with God.
